Nowadays, more and more people are interested in their security and privacy on the Internet.
In the last few years, the situation has changed significantly and people are beginning to realize that various multinational corporations and governments know details about us that we would not even share with our friends.
Cyber-attacks and theft of private data is increasing every day. This sensitive data is subsequently sold on the black market as well as being used by corporations for targeted advertising and creating behavioral patterns of target groups.
Fortunately, there are now tools to help us hide this activity on the Internet.
What is virtual private network (VPN)?
It involves connecting individual computers to a secure network. For example, if you need to connect to a corporate network from your home, you will use VPN to keep your data safe.
VPN tagging is also used to connect your computer to an intermediary using VPN protocols.
In this case, data is encrypted on your computer using a VPN client (for example, many antivirus programs have VPN clients), and then the data is sent to the selected VPN server.
The server decrypts this data and translates where it was originally directed. Because of this encryption, your ISP does not know who you are communicating with on the Internet and which websites you visit.
Moreover, the destination page does not know your real IP address but only sees the IP address of the VPN server.
Currently, many providers have been ordered by their governments to store data on citizens' Internet activity so it is a good way to protect their privacy.
In some countries, such as China and Turkey, censorship takes places thus some content is blocked. VPN usage is the way to obtain this content.
There is also the disadvantage of using VPN clients in lower latency, which is dependent on the distance between your computer, the VPN server and the end server. This distance reduces the speed of data transfer.
However, this slowdown is not dramatic, ranging in units of percent, as in the case of a slower latency.
The main drawback is the fact that your ISP sees the connection to your VPN provider. VPN providers also use leased data centers in which servers are located. This setup requires trust between VPN providers and data centers and you VPN clients and VPN providers.
Fortunately, thanks to the big boom of blockchain technology and bitcoin success, better times go ahead and new projects are being created.
They aim to create a completely decentralized VPN network where no intermediary is needed and our data will be completely protected.
One of these projects is the Mysterium network and the second is Privatix.
Privatix is a newer project and ICO will be held in a month.
Mysterium Network has already had a great ICO in which they gained $14 million in less than an hour. Their alpha version of the network has already been released to the public.
Both of these decentralized VPNs are designed to reward token providers on the one hand, and on the other hand, customers who need VPN services pay tokens for these services.
